TAIPEI, Taiwan — A Norwegian freighter sank off Taiwan’s southern coast today after an explosion that killed two crewmen and injured at least one, a port official said.
Twenty-three other crewmen were rescued by a Taiwanese vessel shortly after the freighter, Bow Reidun, sank about 90 miles south of Kaohsiung Port, said the official. He said the vessel had been en route to Singapore from Japan.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.
The vessel had been used to carry chemical materials but was unloaded when the blast occurred, the port official said.
