New Drug Czar
Bravo to Gerald Uelmen for his illuminating comments on the appointment of former Florida Gov. Bob Martinez as federal drug czar (Commentary, Dec. 11).
Calvin Coolidge once admitted: “The business of America is business.” Wars of any type make for good business--whether it is a war on drugs or a war in the Middle East; whether the war is promoted and perpetuated by the drug-abuse industrial complex or the military-industrial complex.
While war does serve to greatly enhance profits, it also is used as a pretext to constrict civil liberties and conscript people and materials for “the cause.”
Reactionary Bob Martinez, an out-of-work political crony of George Bush, is a perfect figure to carry on the conservative agenda of maintaining a war in the streets.
