Aberman Saluted

Thank you for Phil Sneiderman’s excellent article on Kathleen Aberman, president of The Eagle Rock Assn. (Glendale Section, Nov. 29). It was wonderful to see the smiling face of this valiant woman in your paper and have her, at last, receive some positive recognition for the unending expenditure of time and effort she continues to make for her community.

The surge of residents’ community organizations in Northeast Los Angeles within the last five years, such as the Highland Park Neighborhood Assn., the Mount Washington Assn., and the Glassell Park Community Assn., as well as The Eagle Rock Assn., represents an enormous amount of volunteered time.

Essentially, the leadership of these organizations is an unpaid, full-time job. Fueled by love for their communities and the unshakable belief in our democracy, the leaders and the members of these community groups are the “Little Guys” doing what Americans always believe they can do, fight and prevail over the entrenched “Big Guys.”

Kathleen Aberman and the others like her in the community are the unsung folk heroes of our times, the stuff of legends. Thanks for shining a much deserved light on this grass-roots heroine.
