Murder Charge Filed in Bar Killing
Murder and assault charges were filed Monday against a Lawndale an who shot and killed a friend, apparently mistaking him for a man with whom he had been arguing.
Thomas Glover, 31, was arrested Dec. 13 outside The Hut bar at 16618 Hawthorne Blvd. as he tried to tend to his mortally wounded friend, Carl Paape, 33, sheriff’s homicide Detective Joe Olmedo said.
Witnesses told detectives that Glover and Paape, who worked together at a local chemical company, were asked to leave the bar after they got into a shouting match with another man shortly after midnight. As the trio left, a fourth man followed them and a brief fight ensued.
After one of the men hit Glover in the face, he became enraged and stormed off to his nearby home while Paape followed the men back into the bar, Olmedo said.
Glover allegedly returned carrying a shotgun. As Paape exited the bar, Glover, apparently unable to recognize his friend, fired one round at him, striking him in the chest, Olmedo said.
Paape died at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne about 90 minutes later.
A second man, Timothy Garcia, 28, who looked outside to see what the commotion was about, suffered minor injuries from shotgun pellets when Glover allegedly fired a second time.
