All the Same: Vice President Dan Quayle...
All the Same: Vice President Dan Quayle raised some eyebrows when he told Republican governors: “I believe that economic sanctions and U.N. resolutions alone will not convince Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq.” The mistaken country was in prepared remarks and read by Quayle. Aides blamed a speech writer.
Rope Trick: Mark Randall, 23, was arrested last week for dropping from the observation deck of the Statue of Liberty by a rope. Charged with disorderly conduct, Randall said he was demonstrating on behalf of Indian activist Leonard Peltier, who in 1977 was convicted of killing two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. “As long as Leonard Peltier is in jail, liberty is just a statue,” Randall told police. He said the idea of rappelling off Lady Liberty came to him in a vision.
Catbird Seat: Prince Charles, ending a visit to Britain’s forces in the Persian Gulf, took a fighter-pilot’s-eye look at the desert Sunday. The heir to the throne, himself a civilian pilot, climbed into the cockpit of a fully armed Tornado but kept its wheels on the ground. Would he like to take the plane up? “One day, yes (but) I think I’m getting too old for this.”
Revealing: When a topless bar in Dallas raised $600 from employees and sent it to the Union Gospel Mission for the homeless, they got a surprise response: The money was returned. “It’s kind of hypocritical for us to be teaching and preaching to our guys about moral responsibility and at the same time taking in the benefits of people’s moral irresponsibility,” said mission spokesman William Thompson. But Gentleman’s Club owner Randy Dumas responded: “I guess we were just a little hurt that they looked down their noses at us.”
