No Charges as Point-Shaving Inquiry Nears End

A 10-month investigation into allegations of point shaving by North Carolina State basketball players has uncovered little evidence, with two key sources softening earlier incriminating statements, attorneys say.

The North Carolina investigation is largely completed, but it won’t officially be closed until a similar inquiry in New Jersey is over, said Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby Jr.

“The information that we have uncovered and that New Jersey has made available to us makes me think that right now it’s not appropriate to initiate any prosecution,” he said.

Willoughby stressed, however, that the New Jersey investigation was still active.

The investigation began in earnest in February, when ABC News reported New Jersey businessman Robert Kramer paid money to N.C. State basketball player Charles Shackleford for point shaving. Shackleford admitted accepting $65,000, but denied taking part in point shaving.
