‘Bonfire’ TV Ad Assailed
I must protest the TV commercial for “The Bonfire of the Vanities.” The ad’s last image is a shot of the two male stars, Tom Hanks and Bruce Wilis, framing a full-body shot of female star Melanie Griffith in lacy black lingerie.
The juxtaposition of these images sends a very powerful message: that the male stars are important individuals with faces and personalities while Griffith is needed only for her body.
This is obviously sexist and exploitive. Women are so tired of receiving these images from the media. It’s offensive. Time for it to stop.
