CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : EL CAJON : Pair Plead Innocent in Fatal Dog Attack

A Dulzura couple whose dogs allegedly attacked and killed a 69-year-old ranch hand pleaded innocent to involuntary manslaughter charges. Charles Duarte and Cynthia Sue Ward, appearing before Presiding Municipal Judge Christine K. Goldsmith, also pleaded innocent to one felony count of owning mischievous animals that caused death. Melvin Roy Johnson was attacked and killed by a pack of dogs Dec. 12, 1989, while he was walking near a trail that runs along a ranch owned by Duarte and Ward.
