RACING : Jackie Wackie, 7-5, Wins Again
MIAMI — Jackie Wackie, the 7-5 favorite, outran Gizmo’s Fortune by half a length to win the $100,000 Tropical Park Derby at Calder Race Course Sunday in the closing of the 50-day Tropical at Calder meeting at the Miami track.
Gulfstream Park opens an 82-day meeting today.
The show horse was Paulus at 8-1, finishing six lengths behind the 3-2 Gizmo’s Fortune in the field of 13 going a mile and an eighth.
Jackie Wackie, ridden by Heberto Castillo Jr., was timed at 1:51:45 and paid $4.80, $2.80 and $2.60. Gizmo’s Fortune paid $3 and $3, and Paulus paid $3.80.
Jackie Wackie, a Florida-bred gelding by Hostage, has finished first eight straight times since being purchased last July in a package deal by Gus DeMoranis, who later sold a half interest to Carol Rocca.
