Coast Savings Financial: Aided by a special $52.7-million gain stemming from the repurchase of subordinated notes, the parent of Coast Savings Bank posted a profit of $50.1 million in the fourth quarter. Had it not been for the special gain, the Los Angeles-based thrift would have lost $2.6 million. A year earlier, Coast earned $6.2 million. For 1990, Coast earned $2.9 million, contrasted with a loss of $74.2 million in 1989.
