Teachers in the Conejo Valley Unified School District overwhelmingly approved a three-year contract Wednesday afternoon that would give the district’s 712 teachers a raise of more than 20% by July, 1992.

Of the district’s 520 union members, 350 cast ballots, with 320 in support.

The raise will come in three stages, said John Uelmen, president of the United Assn. of Conejo Teachers. Teachers will receive a 7% salary increase retroactive to July, 1990, followed by a 7% increase this July and a 6% increase in July, 1992.

Salaries for entry-level teachers would go from $24,332 to $26,035 annually, with the highest salary increasing from $43,898 to $46,970 annually under the contract. Teachers will also receive a small, onetime lottery bonus, but will not continue to get a portion of the district’s California Lottery funds as they have in the past.

Class size would also be reduced from a maximum of 37 students to 36 for fourth- through sixth-grades. Secondary physical education classes may also be reduced in size.
