Macy to Serve in Dual Role as Coach of Cleveland Track, Football Teams

Everett Macy, who joined the Cleveland High staff last fall to resurrect the track program, also has been hired to coach the football team, the school announced Wednesday.

Macy, 47, succeeds Steve Landress, who resigned at the end of last season and remains at the school as the junior-varsity baseball coach. Cleveland stumbled to an 0-8-1 record last fall and forfeited its first-round playoff game in the City Section 4-A Division playoffs because of injuries and academic ineligibilities. Landress compiled a 22-35-1 record in six seasons.

Since Landress’ resignation, Macy has been the unofficial interim coach at Cleveland. This will be Macy’s first head coaching job in football since he joined the Los Angeles Unified School District 25 years ago.

He worked as an assistant at Los Angeles and Poly highs and also served as an assistant at Harvard when he first arrived in Southern California after graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1965. He also was the head track coach at Poly for six years in the 1970s. Cleveland brought back its track program this season after a one-year hiatus.

After a lengthy break from football, Macy rejoined the Poly staff when Fred Cuccia took the job in 1989. Macy worked with the Parrots last summer until he transferred to Cleveland as a dean of students.

Macy continued to work with the Poly program last season, coaching the defense part time and serving as an assistant on game days when his schedule permitted. Macy worked all four playoff games as Poly marched to the 3-A championship.
