Ex-Harbor Baseball Coach Honored
Jim O’Brien, who led Harbor College to three state baseball titles before retiring in May, was named national community college coach of the year for the third time. He accepted the award at the annual convention of the American Baseball Coaches Assn. in New Orleans.
In 15 years at Harbor, O’Brien compiled a 460-171-2 record and led the Seahawks to 11 conference titles and six state championship finals.
In 1990, O’Brien’s last season, the Seahawks won the state title after going undefeated in the Southern California Athletic Conference (20-0). Harbor also broke a state record by winning 51 games.
O’Brien stepped down at the end of the season to dedicate more time to his family and duties as athletic director at Harbor.
