ROUNDUP : Kenyon’s Goals Help El Toro Turn Back Mission Viejo in Girls’ Soccer

Denise Kenyon scored twice as unbeaten El Toro defeated Mission Viejo, 3-1, in a South Coast League girls’ soccer game Thursday at El Toro High School.

Mission Viejo scored 48 seconds into the game on a goal by Jill Flory.

Kenyon tied the score off a cross-pass from Shawn Viloria at the 30-minute mark. Kenyon scored the go-ahead goal 16 minutes into the second half with an assist from Jenny Clabaugh.

El Toro (21-0-2, 4-0-2) scored its third goal when Stephanie Ashman and Shawna Berke each kicked the ball after Jenny Kleugel’s shot rebounded off the goalie.

“They each said the other scored the goal,” El Toro Coach Kerry Krause said. “So I give them each a half goal in our book.”

Karajean Stevenson had seven saves for Mission Viejo (11-2-6, 3-1-3 in league). Allegra Garcia had one save and Traci Jensen had two for El Toro.

In another South Coast League game:

Dana Hills 1, Capistrano Valley 0--Amy Kroeger scored 13 minutes into the game for visiting Dana Hills (10-4-4, 3-1-2).

In Angelus League girls’ soccer:

Mater Dei 3, Rosary 1--Amber Escobedo scored twice and Katie Ward added one goal for visiting Mater Dei. Amy Shanks scored for Rosary (9-5-4, 2-3-1). The match was tied, 0-0, at the half. Escobedo scored the first goal for Mater Dei, Shanks tied the score, then Ward followed with the go-ahead goal.

In Century League girls’ soccer:

Orange 1, Villa Park 1--Laura Roundy scored in the 15th minute to give Orange (3-6-4, 1-2-3) a 1-0 lead, and Elizabeth Green scored 10 minutes into the second half to tie the score for Villa Park. Rebecca Comstock had 11 saves for Orange and Amy Lewis had seven for Villa Park.

Foothill 2, El Modena 1--El Modena led, 1-0, at halftime, but Kathy Shortall and Kari Maeda scored in the second half for Foothill (9-6-4, 4-0-2). Amy Moreno had nine saves for El Modena (5-8-4, 1-3-2). Julie Ehret had four saves and Michelle Webb had three for Foothill.

In Empire League girls’ soccer:

Los Alamitos 4, Loara 0--Julie Harris scored twice and Karen Kolodziej and Sharyn Skoglund each scored once for host Los Alamitos (15-3-2, 5-0-1). Cathy Skoglund had eight saves for Los Alamitos. Valerie Bailey had 12 saves for Loara (6-8-1, 1-4-1).

In Freeway League girls’ soccer:

Sunny Hills 5, Buena Park 0--Leah Russell and Heidi Gugler each scored twice and Wanda Partida once for host Sunny Hills (15-1-1, 5-1).

In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:

Kennedy 2, Garden Grove 0--Lori Van Herk and Brande Bower scored for Kennedy (9-4-3, 5-0-1). Nicole Knotts had 12 saves for Garden Grove.

In Olympic League girls’ soccer:

Capistrano Valley Christian 5, Brethren Christian 0--Shannon Jacobson and Erin Davenport each scored twice and Megan Mahlstad once for Capistrano Valley Christian (7-3-3, 4-2-3).

Orange Lutheran 2, Ayala 0--Shawnna Johnson and Kristina Riedmann scored for visiting Orange Lutheran (9-5-1, 6-2-1). Amy DuPont had 11 saves for Orange Lutheran. Kristen Carriger had nine saves for Ayala (10-7-3, 3-3).

In Orange League girls’ soccer:

Brea-Olinda 4, Savanna 3--Niccole Ugay, Karen Ferrier, Beckie Engel and Trish Best each scored for Brea-Olinda (6-8-4, 2-1-3) in the first half. Alica Snyder scored twice and Samantha Nygren scored once for Savanna in the second. Heather Colvin had 11 saves for Brea-Olinda. Kim Wire had seven saves for Savanna.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ soccer:

Trabuco Hills 6, Costa Mesa 0--Angela Suma scored twice and Betsy Yapp, Kristen Lowry, Ali Lehman and Lindsay Rogers once each for host Trabuco Hills (12-3-3, 5-0-1). Andrea Davis had 14 saves for Costa Mesa (1-9-1, 1-5-0). Shannon Pickett had two saves for her eighth shutout.

Estancia 10, Laguna Beach 2--Lauren Weaver had three goals and Tracie Manz and Danielle Straub two each as host Estancia (12-2-3, 5-0-1) kept pace with Trabuco Hills atop the league standings. Hilary Kyle and Rachel Wacholder scored for Laguna Beach (6-4-1, 2-4).

In Sea View League girls’ soccer:

University 3, Tustin 1--Jennifer Whitely scored all three goals for host University (7-5-6, 3-1-2). Carin Reither scored for Tustin. Kelly Kynoch had seven saves for University.

In Sunset League girls’ soccer:

Edison 6, Westminster 0--Linne Thiel scored three goals for host Edison (12-2-6, 5-0-1). Jeanine Martin, Jill Kresenski and Janelle Martin also added goals.

In Century League wrestling:

Santa Ana Valley 42, Villa Park 29--Tommy Le, who is ranked third in the county at 125 pounds, scored a 7-1 victory for Santa Ana Valley. Paul Martinez (140) pinned his opponent in 1 minute 18 seconds, Isidro Benevidas (112) pinned his opponent in 2:40 and Corey Schuld defeated his opponent, 7-0, for visiting Santa Ana Valley (1-2).

In Orange League wrestling:

Savanna 66, Anaheim 9--Tony Okada (135) pinned his opponent in 1:23 for Savanna (13-0, 4-0). Albert Rangel (103) pinned his man in 5:30 for Anaheim (14-6, 1-3).

In Sunset League wrestling:

Huntington Beach 37, Westminster 21--Steve Martinez (140 pounds) and Dan Lukes (171) won by pins for fourth-ranked Huntington Beach (25-2, 5-0).

In Garden Grove League field hockey:

Santiago 2, Santa Ana Valley 1--Espy Monroy and Stephanie Higham scored for visiting Santiago (19-0, 7-0). Santiago led, 1-0, at halftime, but Santa Ana Valley tied the score minutes into the second half. Monroy scored the winning goal with two minutes left. Melissa Moreno had three saves for Santiago, and Heather Franklin had eight for Santa Ana Valley.
