BASEBALL
Darin McGhee’s one-out single in the bottom of the 12th inning drove in the winning run as San Diego State claimed a wild 9-8 victory over the Spanish National Team in an exhibition game at Smith Field.
Spain scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take a four-run lead, but the Aztecs managed to tie it in their half. Brent Ferguson’s two-run homer capped the four-run rally.
Ferguson went three for five with three RBIs and teammate Bill Dunckel three for four with a home run and four runs scored. Seven Aztec pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts.
The Aztecs open their regular season Friday at home against Cal State Los Angeles.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Dee Dee Davis quit the San Diego State women’s basketball team Wednesday for personal reasons, Coach Beth Burns said.
Davis, a 5-foot-9 guard from Los Angeles, was averaging 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game this season. She started all 17 games, and was a three-year letter-winner.
