ORANGE : Old Towne Assn. Honored for Work
The Orange Community Historical Society presented the 15th Annual William T. Glassell Award to the Old Towne Preservation Assn. this month for its help in preserving the heritage of the city.
The association, a 6-year-old nonprofit citizen’s group, was honored for its help in retaining the atmosphere of Old Towne, the city’s historic square-mile downtown district.
The Old Towne Preservation Assn. monitors city decisions on planning and development in the Old Towne neighborhood and conducts tours of historic homes.
The William T. Glassell Award, established in 1977, is named for one of the men who helped design the original tract for Richland, as the city of Orange was first known. Glassell was the younger brother of one of the city’s founders, Andrew Glassell.
Past recipients of the award include Mayor Gene Beyer, former mayor Don E. Smith and local historians Wayne D. Gibson and Don C. Meadows.
