Japan’s Trade Surplus Soars in January: It grew sharply last month compared to January, 1990, but was far below the December level, the Finance Ministry reported. The January total was $986.6 million, up from $319.4 million. December’s trade surplus was $5.39 billion. The month-to-month fall was primarily because of seasonal factors, officials said. Exports were down in January to $21.8 billion, compared to $28.3 billion in December. Imports also fell, to $20.8 billion in January from $22.9 billion in December.
