Pope Calls for Prayer to End Gulf ‘Massacre’

VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II urged the world’s Roman Catholics to pray during Lent for an end to what he called a massacre of lives in the Gulf War.
“Peace needs our personal contribution,” the Pope said during his general audience on Ash Wednesday, start of the 40-day Christian period of Lent.
