Lillian Kositza; One of L.A.’s First Female Doctors
Lillian Kositza, 92, a pediatrician who retired in 1965 after 35 years service with the old city of Los Angeles Health Department. One of the first women physicians in the city, Mrs. Kositza joined the maternal and child health division of the department in 1930 after graduating from Tulane University’s Medical School in 1926. At that time, Tulane was one of only a handful of medical schools in the country accepting women and Kositza was the only woman member of her class. At the health department, since merged with its county counterpart, she directed a series of clinics throughout the city in which indigent women could receive care for themselves and their children. She also was credited with revising the birth certificate form to remove any stigma of illegitimacy. In Los Angeles on Monday.
