HIGH SCHOOL BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Fallbrook Charges Past Southwest
Maybe it was just as well for Southwest High that the scoreboard didn’t work. Or the clock.
At least then, the Raiders weren’t subjected to watching the seconds tick off oh so slowly, which would have been their fate in a game that was as easy for fourth-seeded Fallbrook as it was frustrating for Southwest.
Except for two quick scoring bursts that fizzled before they got started, Southwest was manhandled by Fallbrook. The Warriors cruised to a 69-49 victory at home in a San Diego Section Division I boys’ basketball quarterfinal behind 35 points from Chris Miller and 15 from Bob Nolan.
Fallbrook (18-10) will play Palomar League-rival Rancho Buena Vista Wednesday at a site to be determined. RBV upset San Diego, 62-54, Friday.
After losing to RBV at an early sesaon tournament, Fallbrook won both league games.
“One was 89-88 in triple overtime, and the other was by six points,” said Fallbrook Coach Russ Keith.
There were no such dramatics against Southwest, although the Raiders took a quick 9-7 lead.
Roger Galang scored Southwest’s first nine points but finished the game with just 12. That was similar to the fate of the entire Southwest team.
After taking the quick lead, Southwest scored just two more field goals before halftime and trailed, 33-23.
Down 9-7, Fallbrook went on a 14-1 run to lead 21-10. The second half was the same scenario, as Devin Patterson and Winnjay Delacruz hit three pointers and Patterson added another basket to pull Southwest within 35-31 early in the third quarter.
Once against, Fallbrook took control. The Warriors scored the next 14 points to take a 49-31 lead. Fallbrook put the game away with a 10-0 run that gave it its biggest lead of the game at 59-35.
“That’s out style,” said Keith. “We push our attack inside. I though we had a distinct advantage with our height and bulk, which I think wore them down in the second half.”
Jerry Racette had 14 points and Patterson finished with 13 for Southwest (17-10).
