Earnhardt Holds Off Rudd to Win
From Staff and Wire Reports
Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd raced side-by-side on the final lap of the Pontiac 400 at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia on Sunday, Earnhardt finally winning by a car-length at a record-shattering pace.
Thanks in large part to only six caution flags that led to only 23 of the race’s 400 laps being run under yellow, Earnhardt averaged 104.378 m.p.h. in a Chevrolet Lumina and won $67,950.
The previous record for a Winston Cup event on Richmond’s three-quarter-mile, D-shaped layout was 95.770 m.p.h., by Davey Allison in September, 1988.
