DIVISION V PLAYOFFS : Christian Girls Beat Bishop’s
Christian extended its winning streak to 14 with a 79-46 Division V San Diego Section girls’ basketball semifinal victory over The Bishop’s School at West Hills High Wednesday night.
It is the second consecutive year Christian will appear in the Division V final. Last year, the Patriots (20-4) lost to three-time champion La Jolla, 70-63.
After jumping to a 51-16 lead, first-year coach Ken Weeks had Christian let up on its full-court press and switched to a zone in the second half.
Christian senior guard/forward Tiffany Stutz has been averaging 35 points in her last 10 games, and she equaled that production. She finished with 35 points, 12 steals and 10 rebounds. Stutz hit her first 12 shots of the game, and had 27 points by halftime. Teammate Stacey Patsko pulled down 12 rebounds to go with her 21 points.
Calvin Christian 51, Francis Parker 43--Calvin Christian Coach Preston Bruxvoort knew rebounding would be a key factor in avenging an 18-point loss to Parker his team suffered two weeks ago.
“We needed to rebound better,” Bruxvoort said. “We accomplished that. There was good team rebounding tonight.”
Heather Howerzyl led the Crusaders (20-3) with 15 rebounds and Annetta deJong grabbed 10. deJong also had eight steals in addition to her 19 points.
Calvian Christian and Christian meets at 10:30 Saturday at the Sports Arena for the championship.
Boys
Christian 57, Bishop’s 42--By getting to the championship game, defending state runner-up Christian gets its chance to made a another run at a state title. First they must get past Calipatria, in a 12:30 p.m. title game at the Sports Arena.
Christian (21-5) forced 23 turnovers and broke open the game with a 9-0 run in the third, in which Bishop’s was shut out for four minutes.
Chad DeGrenier led the Patriots with 26 points and four assists. David Piester had 17 points and eight rebounds. It is Christian’s fourth consecutive trip to the section title game in four years. Bishop’s finished at 20-7.
Calipatria 72, La Jolla County Day 64--Center freshman Roferrel Simpson had 25 points for Calipatria. Teammate Nate Mata added 15 points, three on three-pointers.
The game was tied going into the fourth quarter, until Calipatria outscored LJCD, 27-19.
Calipatria is 21-5; LJCD is 20-5.
