TRACK AND FIELD ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar’s Miller Clears 15-1 in Pole Vault
Keith Miller, Orange County’s second-leading pole vaulter last season, cleared 15-feet-1 in his opening meet to lead Corona del Mar to an 84-52 victory over St. John Bosco in nonleague boys’ track Thursday at Corona del Mar.
Miller’s best outdoor mark last high school season was 15-0.
Jack Hogan ran the 800 in 2:00.8, Jason Boyce long-jumped 20-0 1/2 and Jesse Thieland high-jumped 6-2 for Corona del Mar.
In other nonleague boys’ track:
El Modena 116, University 14--Mike Terry of El Modena won the 440-yard dash (51.9), and Brian Valdez of El Modena won the triple jump (43-3 1/2).
Newport Harbor 71, Westminster 53--Hieu Dang won the mile in 4:33 for host Westminster.
In Garden Grove League boys’ track and field:
Kennedy 74, Pacifica 52--Vince Church won the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet and also won two other events at Pacifica.
Church won the long jump (20-8 1/2) and the 440 (53.1 seconds).
Los Amigos 71.5, Santiago 61.5--Linh Le won the 880 yards (2:02), mile (4:48) and the two-mile (10:29), and Jessie Fausto won the 330 hurdles (43.68) and the 440 dash (55.0) for Los Amigos. Andre Roberson won the triple jump (40-6) and long jump (20-5) for Los Amigos.
In Garden Grove League girls’ track:
Los Amigos 40, Santiago 63--Leticia Perez won the 440 dash (1:09) and the mile (6:09), and Katie O’Connor won the 330 hurdles (55.79) and the 110 hurdles (18.41).
In Sunset League boys’ track:
Fountain Valley 94, Ocean View 42--Darek Sanchez won the 100 (11.2) and 200 meters (23.1) and finished second in the triple jump (38-8).
In nonleague girls’ track:
University 63, El Modena 59--Michelle Duckworth of El Modena won the 330-yard hurdles in 49.7 and Kristina Dahlberg of El Modena won the 880 (2:25.5).
Irvine 97, Saddleback 27--Tracy Broughton won the high jump (5-0), long jump (16-3) and the triple jump (33-4 1/4) for host Irvine. Jennifer Gillis won the 1,600 in 5:33 and the 800 in 2:23.7. Kelly Fiduccia ran 13.3 to win the 100 and 28.3 to win the 200.
In the Katella boys’ tri-meet:
Katella 74 1/2, Valencia 64 1/2, Troy 30--Kevin Carlson of Katella won the high jump (6-6) and teammate Derek Nguyen won the pole vault (13-0).
In the Orange Lutheran boys’ four-way:
Maranatha 100 1/2, Orange Lutheran 84 1/2, Laguna Beach 19, Calvary Chapel 11--Corey Fleming of Orange Lutheran won the long jump (20-0 feet) and high jump (6-0).
In the Orange Lutheran girls’ four-way:
Orange Lutheran 84, Laguna Beach 58, Maranatha 56, Calvary Chapel 17--Shawna Johnson of Orange Lutheran won the long jump (14-1 1/2), the 100 meters (13.7) and the 200 meters (29.97).
