Pier Preferences

Redondo Beach residents will have a final chance Wednesday to publicly tell city officials what architectural design should be chosen when the city rebuilds the fire-ravaged municipal pier. The third and final public workshop on the issue will begin at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Schematic drawings, such as the one above with architect Edward Carson Beall and Harbor Director Sheila Schoettger, show the pier with Mediterranean, Victorian (shown at right) and traditional wharf designs. They will be on display Wednesday night or can be viewed at the Harbor Department during working hours. Residents can also make their design preference known by clipping and filling out an advisory ballot that the city recently placed in some local newspapers. The ballots will also be handed out at the workshop, or can be picked up at City Hall. The horseshoe-shaped pier was destroyed by fire in May, 1988. The city has budgeted $6 million for its reconstruction, expected to start within a year.
