COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Wins Two Games at Softball Event
Chapman posted two victories over highly considered NCAA Division II softball opponents Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Garden, Fla.
First, the Panthers scored a 3-1 victory over Northwest Missouri, which was No. 11 in last season’s final rankings. Cheri Schreck (9-2) pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine. Sandy Olivas had three hits and an RBI and Jacki Blake had two hits for Chapman.
Then Chapman (20-2), defeated Wayne State, 2-1, in eight innings. Trina Honea had a single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to win it for Chapman.
Wayne State, which finished last season ranked No. 8, took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but the Panthers scored a run in the seventh to tie it.
The season’s first Division II rankings have not been released.
In nonconference men’s volleyball:
Indiana-Purdue (Ft. Wayne) 3, UC Irvine 2--Fred Malcolm had 33 kills for Indiana-Purdue (11-5), which won, 15-10, 4-15, 7-15, 15-3, 17-15. Steve Florentine had 19 kills and Leland Quinn had 18 kills for the Anteaters (3-11).
