New Airport Opens in England: Queen Elizabeth II formally inaugurated London’s third international airport. The Stansted airport, 30 miles northeast of London, opens to the public Tuesday. The $744-million renovated airport, which replaced one that was built by the U.S. Air Force in 1942, is London’s first new major airport since Gatwick was rebuilt in 1958. Heathrow is by far Britain’s most popular airport. Its 70 scheduled airlines handled 41.6 million passengers the past year. Officials expect 1.5 million passengers at Stansted the first year.
