Ex-Ram Humphrey Picked Up by Chargers
The Chargers announced Monday the signing of defensive back Bobby Humphrey, who led the Los Angeles Rams in interceptions during the 1990 season. Humphrey, 29, became the second Plan B free agent signed by the Chargers, who obtained offensive lineman Mark May from the Redskins March 1.
Humphrey, a nine-year NFL veteran, has started 42 of his past 48 games. He made 10 starts for the Rams last season. He tied for the team lead with four interceptions, returning one for a 44-yard touchdown, and was seventh on the team with 40 tackles. Humphrey played only one season with the Rams, who traded a fifth-round draft pick to the New York Jets for him on draft day 1990.
Humphrey, 5-feet-10 and 180 pounds, spent eight seasons with the Jets after he was drafted in the ninth round (247th overall) out of New Mexico State in 1983. In 1984, Humphrey led the NFL with a 30.7-yard kick return average while playing under current Chargers special teams coach Larry Pasquale. He was runner-up to Seattle’s Fredd Young for the AFC’s Special Teams Player of the Year Award.
