‘Ghost’ Comes Back to Life : THIS WEEK’S MOVIES
“Ghost,” one of the most popular movies in recent years, concerns a man whose spirit refuses to die. Also refusing to die is the delightful film itself: Its haunting blend of romance, suspense, fantasy and humor has re-materialized at your video store.
Starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, the PG-13 rated picture earned about $210 million at theaters last year. A switch for comedy director Jerry Zucker (“The Naked Gun”), the cleverly scripted picture concerns a psychic who reunites two lovers after one is murdered--plus the solving of that murder and much else.
There’s one disappointment for “Ghost” watchers: The Paramount Home Video release isn’t bargain-priced, a la “Pretty Woman.” It’ll cost you right around $100 to own. So rent now, purchase later (like most videos, “Ghost” will probably be heavily discounted sometime in the future). And even sooner, dealers will be selling used copies (as a 60-second spot on the tape informs us).
“Ghost” is already a bargain as a laser disc, only $29.95 from Pioneer in both widescreen and regular version.
Don’t let “Ghost” cause you to overlook another superbly written suspense film from last year: “Pacific Heights” (CBS/Fox, $92.98, R), which stars Michael Keaton, Matthew Modine and Melanie Griffith and benefits from John Schlesinger’s stylish direction.
