Italian Stereotypes
I am writing in regard to the quote made by Cherie Tripp, who handles press relations for the Italian Cup challenger, Il Moro de Venezia. (San Diego at Large, March 20). Ms. Tripp warns us not to “stereotype” about ethnic volatility: “These are northern Italians, not Sicilians,” she cautions. “They don’t carry guns.”
As an American of Sicilian ancestry, I didn’t know whether to laugh or scream in frustration at her remark. Does she imply that all northern Italians are law-abiding citizens, while all Sicilians are gun-toting Mafiosi?
If her statement does not “stereotype,” pray tell what does?
