North Korea Reveals Indicator: For the first time in six years, North Korea has revealed one of its major economic indicators--its annual electricity production. The secretive communist country usually reports its economic trends in percentages, without numerical data. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said the country generated 55.5 billion kilowatt hours in 1989. By comparison, rival South Korea produced 127.7 billion kilowatt hours in 1988, according to Korea Annual’s 1989 edition. North Korea stopped providing major economic index in the mid-1980s, when its troubled economy was reportedly getting worse.
