Aztecs Bounce Back, Defeat New Mexico

San Diego State’s baseball team shook off the effects of having their 13-game winning streak broken the night before, by defeating New Mexico, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in a Western Athletic Conference game.

The Aztecs (26-8, 6-1) got two RBIs from Mike Shwartzer and 5 2/3 innings three-hit relief pitching from John Lynn to key the victory. Derek Vineyard added two hits and Bill Dunckel had a triple. New Mexico fell to 15-22, 3-5.

Saturday, the Aztecs defeated New Mexico, 7-6, in the first game of a doubleheader, but lost the second game, 9-8. SDSU fell behind 9-2, but made it interesting with six runs in the seventh inning. Mark Papadopoulos had two hits and two RBIs in the inning.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Fourteenth-ranked University of San Diego couldn’t overcome losses from its top four singles players and fell to 12th-ranked Indiana, 5-4, in a nonconference match at USD. Tonya Fuller, ranked 12, was upset by 22nd-ranked Stephanie Reece at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Tuck Kacharoen, Laura Richards and Margo Mullally at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles lost in three sets.

Kara Brady and Paula Hansen of USD (11-9) were winners at No. 5 and 6 singles and Richards and Brady and Kacharoen and Hansen won in straight sets at No. 2 and 3 doubles.

HOCKEY

Larry Floyd was selected as the San Diego Gulls most valuable player and Mike Sullivan was named rookie of the year. Floyd led the team in points with 78 on 54 assists and 24 goals. Sullivan scored 12 goals and had 23 assists.

Other Gulls postseason awards went to: Dave Korol for best defenseman; Darin Banister for most improved; and Ron Duguay for unsung hero.
