Injunction Issued: A federal judge on Long Island, N.Y., issued a preliminary injunction barring Newsday from offering an advertising discount program after Suffolk Life, a competing weekly newspaper, charged that the program violated antitrust laws. The three-week program offered Long Island car dealers discounts of 50% if they agreed to run all of their print advertising in Newsday. The program expired March 31. Newsday said it is “certain that our advertising program is not in violation of antitrust laws” and has informed the judge that it intends to appeal. Newsday is a unit of Times Mirror Co., which also publishes the Los Angeles Times.
