WORLD IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : Rebels Blow Up a Major Pipeline
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Leftist guerrillas blew up an oil pipeline that feeds Colombia’s biggest refinery, causing 22,000 gallons of oil to spill into a stream, the government oil company Ecopetrol said. The pre-dawn attack severed a 13-inch pipeline that is the main source of oil for the Barrancabermeja refinery, about 200 miles north of the capital, Bogota. Ecopetrol said the attack was carried out by guerrillas of the National Liberation Army, a group the government hopes to draw into peace talks aimed at ending armed strife in the country.
