Births of 3 Chicks Push Condor Population to 48

A baby boom has increased the population of the California condor to 48, Los Angeles Zoo officials said Monday.

Three condor chicks were produced by a captive-breeding program at the zoo in the past week, hatching on April 24, 26 and 29, spokeswoman Lora LaMarca said. The entire population of California condors, the largest land bird in North America, is housed at the L.A. Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park.

The breeding program is trying to save the condor from the threat of extinction. The last condor was brought in from the wild in 1987, when there were just 27 left.
