GARDEN GROVE : Suspect in Murder Arrested in Illinois
A man has been arrested in connection with the slaying two years ago of a businessman who was beaten and shot by several men because he apparently gave them a disparaging look, police said Monday.
Hung Tien Tran, 29, was arrested on a murder warrant Saturday after a traffic stop by an Illinois state trooper in McLean County, police said.
Police allege that Tran started a fight with Tu Van Nguyen, 33, of Santa Ana at the Phu Khanh Seafood restaurant in Garden Grove on the evening of April 25, 1989.
“Tran attacked Nguyen with a beer bottle, but Nguyen was able to defend himself,” Garden Grove Police Lt. Chuck Gibbs said. As Nguyen tried to run away, Tran’s friend, Thanh Hoang Nguyen (no relation), shot Tu Nguyen in the chest, Gibbs said.
After the shooting, “Hung Tran kicked the victim and told him to hurry up and die,” Gibbs said.
Police said Tran, whose last known residence was in Garden Grove, will be extradited to face the murder charge in Orange County. Thanh Hoang Nguyen has already been convicted of murder in case, Gibbs said.
