Lynwood : Federal Funds Will Be Used for Streets, Parks, Library
The Lynwood City Council has reversed a decision to use $1.5 million in federal funds to redevelop blighted areas and instead approved a plan to renovate streets, parks and the library.
The original intent was to use the money to buy slum property in the redevelopment area and sell it to developers for community improvements.
However, officials decided that the money would be used better to repair city streets, rehabilitate the former city library building, and demolish the existing gym and offices at the Lynwood Community Center in Mervyn Dymally Park. New facilities will be built on the site.
Plans for the work will be submitted to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development for approval.
Work is expected to begin on the community center within a month, said Faustin Gonzales, project manager.
