Grossmont Gets Top Seed
Top-ranked Grossmont and No. 4 Mira Mesa, both defending champions, will enter the 1991 San Diego Section baseball playoffs as the top-seeded teams in their respective divisions. The seedings were completed Friday. The tournaments, which include 16 teams in each the 2-A and 3-A divisions, begin Tuesday.
Defending 3-A champion Mira Mesa (24-4-1) is one of three City Eastern League teams in the playoffs and will open at home against El Capitan (11-13-1).
Defending 2-A champion Grossmont (25-1) will play host to Oceanside (9-15). All first-round games will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Foothillers are one of three Grossmont 2-A league teams in the tournament. The City Western League and the Avocado League each have four representatives. San Marcos (20-3) is seeded second and will play host to Clairemont (12-11-1). Third-seeded USDHS (18-9) will play host to San Pasqual (11-12), and fourth-seeded St. Augustine (18-8) will be at home against La Jolla (13-10).
The Palomar League will have five teams in the 3-A opening round, including Poway (20-6), which is ranked second in the county but did not get seeded. Vista (16-9-1), which won the Palomar League with a 11-3 mark, received the No. 3-seeding and will play host to Monte Vista (10-12) in the first round.
Montgomery (19-5-1), the county’s No. 3-ranked team and one of four Metro Conference teams, will host Fallbrook (12-10). Granite Hills, one of four Grossmont 3-A teams, will play at home against Patrick Henry (9-11).
Francis Parker (12-8) got the No. 1 seed in the eight-team 1-A tournament, and will face one of two teams that will advance out of a preliminary round Monday.
