Arreola, Vett Break CSUN Track Records
Darcy Arreola and Derik Vett of Cal State Northridge set school records in the women’s 1,500 meters and the men’s 5,000, respectively, in the Santa Monica Distance Classic at Santa Monica City College on Friday night.
Arreola won the 1,500 in 4 minutes 11.97 seconds, the fastest women’s outdoor time in the United States this season. Vett finished fifth in the 5,000 in 14:09.3.
Arreola’s time lowered the Northridge record of 4:14.15, which she set in finishing second in the 1989 NCAA Division II championships. It also easily exceeded the automatic qualifying standard (4:18.00) for the Division I championships in Eugene, Ore., May 29-June 1.
Vett, who has set eight personal bests in four events this season, lowered his best in the 5,000 by nearly 44 seconds. Mike Flint set the previous Northridge 5,000 record of 14:11.54 in 1978.
