SANTA ANA : Suspect in Robberies Jailed After Standoff
A suspect in the robberies of several pizza parlors and restaurants was arrested without incident late Thursday night after police SWAT team members surrounded a house in which he had taken refuge, authorities said.
Sgt. Roger Sharf said several families in the 300 block of East Central Avenue were evacuated from their homes as police tried to make contact with the man.
The 23-year-old suspect was arrested about 11:45 p.m. when police spotted him running from the cordoned-off area, Sharf said.
Police did not know if the man was armed during the standoff, Sharf said before the arrest, so “we are just taking the necessary precautions.”
Sharf said the man was a suspect in robberies that have occurred over the last several weeks. A police officer spotted him about 7 p.m. near Central ad Orange Avenue, and the man began running, Lt. Bob Helton said. A helicopter tracked the man as he ran into a house, apparently the home of a relative, Helton said.
