GOLF ROUNDUP : Gilder, Gump Best With 65s on a Hot Day

Bob Gilder displayed shotmaking not seen much from him in eight years, while rookie Scott Gump showed off shotmaking not seen much from him at all, each shooting 65 Thursday to share the first-round lead of the Kemper Open at Potomac, Md.

Gilder, a 16-year veteran who has not won since 1983, had seven birdies, including five on the back nine. Gump, who had broken 70 only twice in 30 rounds this year, had an eagle, five birdies and a bogey.

Six players were one stroke back, seven players at 67, eight at 68 and 35 tied for 24th place at 69 over the 6,904-yard TPC at Avenel course on which 102 players shot par or better.

Gilder, 40, won three tournaments and $308,648 in 1982, and the Phoenix Open in 1983. But he had missed the cut in three of his last past five tournaments.

“The game wasn’t fun, and I was struggling with that for quite a while,” he said. “I haven’t really felt comfortable until today.”

After a harrowing run-in with lightning, Chris Johnson shot a 67 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the LPGA Rochester International in New York.

Beth Daniel missed a four-foot bogey putt on the 18th hole to fall into a group of eight at 68.

A thunderstorm struck the Locust Hill course, sending players scurrying for the clubhouse. Lightning struck a tree near the 12th fairway. Johnson was preparing to putt on the third green when she saw the lightning.

“If you have your head down and you can see the flash, it’s got to be pretty close,” she said.

Seve Ballesteros and Colin Montgomerie were tied at 66 after the opening round of the British Masters at Woburn, England.
