Jones Heads List of Athletes Competing in National Scholastic Outdoor Track Meet
Marion Jones of Rio Mesa High and Juliana Yendork of Walnut head the list of athletes scheduled to compete in the first National Scholastic Outdoor track and field championships at Birmingham High, June 8-9.
Jones, the defending state champion in the girls’ 100 and 200 meters, has the fastest girls’ prep times in the nation this year in the 100 (11.28 seconds), 200 (22.87) and 400 (52.91).
Yendork is the two-time defending state champion in the girls’ long jump (personal best of 21 feet 3 1/4 inches) and triple jump (43-11 1/2).
The boys’ events are headed by Matt Hemingway of Buena Vista, Colo., who has cleared 7-4 in the high jump this season, and Dennis Black of Great Falls, Mont., who has put the shot 70 feet 7 inches.
Also entered are Mario Sategna of Bloomfield, N. M., who has run 37.44 in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and cleared 16-3 1/2 in the pole vault; and Brian Ellis of Spencer, N. C., who has bounded 50-0 1/2 in the triple jump.
Qualifying trials in the running and field events will be held June 8, starting at 3 p.m.. The finals will begin at noon June 9.
