Capistrano Valley Students Offer Theories on Evolution-Creation Flap

As a student at Capistrano Valley High School, I find myself in the midst of the controversy concerning Mr. John Peloza and his teaching methods. As a former student of Mr. Peloza’s, I feel that I am even more involved; what he is doing now directly affects my education.

I was enrolled in his anatomy and physiology class last year as a junior. His teaching methods offended me then and continue to offend me now. He deliberately rejected the school curriculum by refusing to teach evolution. This is contrary to the Constitution.

In Epperson vs. Arkansas, 1968, the Supreme Court held that the Constitution “forbids alike the preference of a religious doctrine or the prohibition of theory.” This is not the decision of the school, the district or even the state--this is determined by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Peloza claims to teach both sides of the story. The only time he presents the theory of evolution in the classroom is when he is attempting to expose its invalidity. As his student, I know. He does not teach both sides.

Mr. Peloza may not be openly preaching in the classroom or actively converting students during school hours, but by altering the curriculum he is indirectly supporting his religious views.
