* What Hippocratic Oath?: A British doctor says he now regrets advising Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to quit smoking 15 years ago. “It was an awful mistake,” William Frankland said. Hussein “had been smoking 60 (cigarettes) a day for as long as he could remember, so his lungs were shot to pieces,” said Frankland, who was called to Baghdad when aides thought Hussein had an allergy. The doctor warned Hussein to give up the habit or he would be dead in two years. “He never said anything at the time but next morning I was told that he had given up.”

* Isle of Debt: A financially troubled Saudi prince who has already lost Georgia land in a bankruptcy auction must sell one of South Carolina’s last unspoiled barrier islands to further whittle his $21 million in debts. The $3.5-million island of Prince Faisal Mohamed Al-Saud Al Kabir, 46, near Beaufort, S.C., is connected at low tide to the 800-acre island owned by Atlanta media magnate Ted Turner. The prince is a nephew of Saudi King Fahd.

* What a Sight: Raisa Gorbachev has opted for sightseeing rather than equality of the sexes. On a visit to Norway today with Mikhail Gorbachev, the wife of the Soviet president had planned to discuss women’s issues and equal opportunities, but a Norwegian government spokesman said: “She wants more sightseeing instead.” Her husband is to accept the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize during the visit.

* Laboring: That was Labor Secretary Lynn Martin leading a pack of employees on an aerobic walk recently in Washington, D.C., in a warm-up for the June 15 5-kilometer Race for the Cure. Several other Cabinet members will also follow Vice President Dan Quayle and his wife, Marilyn, again this year in the race, which benefits breast cancer research.
