A 25-year-old man was killed when he was thrown from a car that overturned on California 76, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Mark H. Patterson of Escondido was one of three passengers in a 1985 Ford Bronco that rolled over 1 1/2 times at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Officer Bob Melton said. There were no other injuries, Melton said, although passenger David Preschern, 21, of Escondido also was thrown from the vehicle. None of the occupants was wearing a seat belt, he added.
The driver, Curtis G. Wells, 21, of Escondido was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and vehicular manslaughter, Melton said.
Wells was westbound on California 76, about 1,300 feet from its junction with California 79, when he drifted onto the dirt shoulder, Melton said. He over-corrected, forcing the car to skid to the north side of the road, where it overturned, Melton said.
