Cable-TV Hearings Conclude: Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Telecommunications subcommittee, concluded four hearings on new legislation to re-regulate the cable-TV industry. The focus of the hearing in Washington was on whether cable-TV systems should pay local TV stations for the right to carry network programming. In testimony, CBS Inc. Chairman Laurence A. Tisch called for “retransmission consent,” which the cable industry opposes on grounds that it would only result in higher fees to cable subscribers.
