Brown, Reilly Advance to Final of La Jolla Tennis Tournament
Mike Brown of Ramona and Chris Reilly of San Diego will meet in the men’s open final of the 75th La Jolla Tennis Championships today after both scored straight-set victories in Saturday’s semifinals at the La Jolla Tennis Club.
Eighth-seeded Brown, the only seeded player to advance to the semis, defeated Gary Rees of Laguna Hills, 6-4, 6-3. Reilly knocked off Freddy Hanser of Austria, 6-4, 7-6.
Top-seeded Jennifer Slattery of Huntington Beach advanced to face second-seeded Julie Tullberg of Ojai in today’s women’s open final. Slattery beat ex-San Diego State player Dorie Brandt of Brea, 6-2, 6-0, Saturday, while Tullberg, Brandt’s former doubles partner at SDSU, rallied to beat No. 6 Branaca Elsberry of La Jolla, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
The women’s final is at 9 a.m. today; while the men’s final will start at 10:30 a.m.
GOLF
Chargers quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver and former Dodger, Pirate and Yankee pitcher Rick Rhoden each shot par 72, the best round of the day, at the Celebrity Golf Assn. Championship at the 6,747-yard Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Ex-Atlanta Falcons quarterback Steve Bartkowski took a one-stroke lead at 146 with a second-round 74. Tolliver entered today’s final round four strokes back. Total purse of the tournament is $400,000 with the winner to receive $75,000.
BASEBALL
Ralph Krause hit a three-run home run and Dave Campagna added a two-run shot to help the San Diego Stars build a 9-3 lead over the California Seals in a game at Grossmont College that was suspended because of darkness.
The host Stars, who finished fourth at the National Baseball Congress semipro baseball World Series last year, have won three consecutive losers’ bracket games in 1991 Fourth of July Regional Tournament.
The Stars have beaten the Orange County Yankees, 18-3, the Riverside Roundtrippers, 9-8, and the Orange County Dodgers, 19-6, after they lost to the Dodgers, 7-6, Friday. They will resume play against the Seals at 10 a.m. today. The winner will face the Victor Valley Mets in the losers’ bracket final. The San Bernardino Indians, currently 4-0 in the tourney, have advanced to the 2 p.m. final at Grossmont. A second game at 5 p.m. will be played if the Indians lose.
