FLICKS FILM AND VIDEO FILE : Oases of Fun : A week of alternatives to new movies and long lines begins with “Lawrence of Arabia” in Thousand Oaks.

If you love movies, but can’t stand the crowds lining up for the newest summer releases, there are plenty of local alternatives in the week ahead.

First on the schedule is Saturday’s Classic Cinema night at the Thousand Oaks Library, featuring the original 1962 version of “Lawrence of Arabia.”

The epic motion picture, starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guiness, Anthony Quinn, Claude Rains and Omar Sharif, picked up seven Academy Awards, including those for Best Picture and Best Director (David Lean). It’s the story of adventurer T. E. Lawrence. Show time is 7 p.m. at the library, 1401 E. Janss Road. For information, call 497-6282.

Moving right along. On Sunday, the Paramount Ranch will open this season’s “Silents Under the Stars” series with the film “Fig Leaves.” This 20th-Century version of Adam and Eve stars George O’Brien and Olive Borden. O’Brien is a struggling young plumber and Borden his wife, longing for the good life. The serpent in this story is the blonde woman who lives next door. “Fig Leaves” was directed by Howard Hawks.

Paramount Ranch is in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area on Cornell Road. Show time is 8:30 p.m. Admission is $6. The film will be shown outside, so bring a flashlight and dress appropriately. For information, call (818) 597-1036.

More movies under the stars: The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District will show Walt Disney’s “Jungle Book” on Wednesday evening as part of its “Films Under the Stars” series. The film will be shown at the Bicentennial Amphitheater, 1765 Royal Ave., Simi Valley, beginning at 8 p.m. Admission is free. Again, the movie is outside, so plan accordingly. For those who prefer to be indoors, the Ray D. Prueter Library will show “Hoober Bloob Highway” and “Dear Kurt” at Wednesday’s Family Film Night. “Hoober Bloob Highway” is a Dr. Seuss tale about a journey from the country to the city, with plenty of odd encounters along the way. “Dear Kurt” centers around the relationship of a father and son as the former helps the latter prepare for a soapbox derby. Prueter Library is at 510 Park Ave., Port Hueneme. The first film will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free. For information, call 486-5460.

Here’s a postscript to the recent review of the Edwards Cinemas multiplex in Simi Valley’s Mountaingate Plaza, in which I mentioned that parking was a struggle on weekends.

A plaza publicist brought to my attention that, although parking may be difficult to find in front of the theater, there is an abundance of parking in a new lot out back. Increased publicity of this parking lot, it is hoped, will lead more people back there. Consider this some of that publicity.
