COUNTYWIDE : Proposed Hikes in State Park Fees to Be Discussed
Proposed fee increases at state parks in Ventura County and throughout California will be discussed at a meeting in Santa Barbara on Thursday.
Under the proposal, a maximum of $12 would be charged at developed state parks; $14 at coastal campsites; $7 at undeveloped campsites; and $16 at developed horse camps run by the state.
Officials from the state Department of Parks and Recreation will answer questions about the planned increases from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors Room, fourth floor, 105 E. Anapamu St.
A similar meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale.
The fees would increase Sept. 6 to make up for state budget cuts, department spokesman John Arnold said.
About 40% of operating costs for state parks are funded by state taxes, down from 90% in 1982, Arnold said.
The proposed fees may be adjusted according to rates imposed at city- and county-run parks in specific areas, Arnold said.
Some fees, primarily for parking, may even decrease, he said.
“A lot of people are concerned about rates for camping, and this meeting will give those people a chance to voice their suggestions and comments,” he said.
