Norman in Santa Barbara: A longtime friendship with a former teacher will bring American soprano Jessye Norman to Santa Barbara Sept. 29 to give a concert benefiting the UC Santa Barbara Vocal Institute. In the 1960s, Norman was a student of Elizabeth Mannion at the University of Michigan. Mannion is now director of the UCSB Vocal Institute. Among other donors to the benefit are the Corwin Family-Metropolitan Theatres, the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and UC Santa Barbara.
