Honoring an Honoree: Longtime television observer Syd Cassyd is being doubly honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which he founded in 1946 and headed in 1950. The academy’s board of governors has created the Syd Cassyd Founder’s Award in his honor and will present the first one to Cassyd himself on Aug. 25, the date of this year’s prime-time Emmy Awards. Cassyd started the TV academy to promote the cultural, educational and research aims of television. The award bearing his name will be given not annually but “at such times” as the board determines a deserving recipient for long and distinguished service to the academy.
